Join Amber Karnes and Chel Rogerson at the Outer Banks this summer for a 5-day, 4-night retreat vacation packed with gentle yoga, beach time, beginner-friendly hoop and pole dance classes, camaraderie, relaxation, rejuvenation, laughter, body-positive discussion, and self-care.
If you want to practice yoga, but can’t find a teacher that knows how to accommodate your unique body, you’re in the right place. We’ll feel the ocean breeze as we practice gentle morning yoga together on the beach. In the evenings, we’ll enjoy sound healing meditations and guided relaxation to ensure the best night’s sleep you’ve ever had!
Find your flow! Hoop dancing explores the art of using the hula hoop as a dance partner for fitness, artistic expression and meditation known as “flow!” Anyone can hula hoop, including men and women of all ages. Together we will learn graceful dance moves and explore circus-inspired hoop tricks, all while getting an incredible workout with mindfulness benefits.
Pole dancing is a fun, empowering workout that will do wonders for your self esteem and people of all ages, shapes and sizes can build confidence while learning to pole dance. We will smile, laugh and create a riot good time during our pole party at the retreat! You might be surprised at how bold, beautiful and strong you can be!

Our Beach House
Treat yourself to a retreat at the OBX Beach Palace: an 8 bedroom, 5.5 bath luxury home in Corolla’s sought after Whalehead community. Enjoy the oversized private pool and relaxing hot tub, private volleyball court, game room with pool table, flat screen TVs in every room, and gorgeous views of the ocean, bay, and lighthouse from the upper floor. The house has wrap around decks with plentiful space to relax and enjoy spectacular views of the Currituck Sound. A short walk on the community boardwalk gives us easy and safe access to the exclusive Whalehead beaches where wild horses can often be seen! It’s also convenient to Corolla shopping and dining. This is a one-of-a-kind location for complete relaxation and rejuvenation!
You’re also in for a treat because Amber and Chel will be preparing all the meals at this retreat! We’ll be enjoying delicious, whole-foods vegetarian fare served family style. We’ve both been enthusiastic home chefs for years and can’t wait to have you at our family table. Each meal will be prepared fresh with attention to flavor and quality. Special dietary needs are easily accommodated! We’ll share all meals with the exception of Tuesday night, when we’ll have dinner out on the town at one of the great local spots.
North Carolina’s Outer Banks are over 100 miles of golden sand and pure Atlantic salt water. We can thank the multitude of parks, wildlife refuges, coastal maritime forest, golf courses and seashores for preserving the OBX’s wild side. The wind-shaped landscapes and world renowned waters of the Outer Banks are a natural playground waiting to be explored.
Locals here feel an innate closeness to these elements, often serving as a source of livelihood, but also a connection to previous generations and our own country’s rich history. Drawn to the open spaces and natural settings that stir the soul, the chain of barrier islands that make up the Outer Banks helps to remind us of our place in the world. No city lights or tall buildings spoil the view just open for endless possibilities.
Hey, I’m Amber Karnes, creator of Body Positive Yoga.
Yoga has been an integral part of my decade-long journey toward self-acceptance and body positivity – making peace with my body and helping others to do the same. I believe that through joyful movement and self-care, we can learn radical self-acceptance and positively experience our bodies, no matter our shape, size, age, or ability.
In my yoga teaching, I emphasize safe alignment and mindful transitions, and help you give yourself permission to honor the body you bring to the mat today, while also being empowered to learn about the body’s intelligence and power. I infuse my classes, workshops, and retreats with the foundational principles of inclusivity, agency, consent, body positivity, and self-acceptance.
I’ve been leading sold out, body-positive retreats all over the country and have been amazed and so grateful to see the transformations that take place when folks feel empowered in their bodies and confident in their minds and hearts. I’m Chel, and I believe we all have the power within us to enjoy good health, happiness and prosperity. We do so through self-love, practicing mindfulness and compassion and embracing creativity and play! Dancing frees me. Yoga quiets my mind. Travel fills me with wonder!
Growing up, I never was a gymnast or naturally athletic. But in my late 20’s, I found a passion for pole dancing and yoga that has lead me to living a life beyond my wildest dreams. This once very self-conscious girl performs circus arts on stage as “Gypsea BombChel.” I also share what I have learned teaching classes and workshops for yoga, pole dance and hoop dance. I want to share with others these healing art forms of self expression and play!
I’ve trained all over the world, meditating in Nepal and visiting temples in Southeast Asia, studying yoga in California and with intensive 200-hour training from British Columbia, hoop dancing on the magical islands of Bali and Thailand! I perform with The Hoop Unit, a professional hoop troupe in San Diego. I’ve also learned a great deal about compassion by volunteering with orphans and underprivileged kids in Sri Lanka, Peru and Mexico.
I am a 200-hour Yoga Alliance certified instructor and am Reiki level 1 and 2 certified. I have a California soul and a Carolina heart: living in San Diego, California, and Outer Banks, North Carolina. A personal note from Amber…
Chel and I met back when we worked together in corporate-land and have been friends ever since (12 years!). I’m so excited for you to meet her. Chel and I share a love of joyful movement, nature, and mindful connection. I’ve been so amazed to watch Chel’s journey as she went from self-conscious to totally badass and self-assured, not to mention being incredibly proud of her achievements through her practice and dedication to the flow arts. Chel and I have both had similar struggles with body image, disordered eating, and self-acceptance, and we’ve both found our way to a more peaceful, integrated place through mindful movement and self-care. We can’t wait to share some of the tools that got us there at this retreat!

The $649 retreat ticket price includes all meals (except one dinner out), and all classes, workshops, and activities. Lodging prices vary from luxurious king master suites with deck access and a private bath to budget-friendly dorm accommodations. We have offerings for single or double occupancy so bring your friends and save money!

Want to extend your stay?
A full week in the Outer Banks is a truly healing experience! While the retreat activities span August 20-24, we actually have the house for a full week (August 19-26). You can choose to arrive a day early or add up to 2 days after the retreat ends. You’ll be on your own for meals and make your own schedule during these extra days, but you’ll have full use of the house during this time. Prices vary based on room choice. You’ll select this when you fill out the registration form.

Pay your deposit of $350 to secure your spot!
Balance is due in full immediately. Once you put down a deposit and select your accommodations, Amber will invoice you for the remaining balance. Please carefully read the cancellation policy below before registering.
- Before July 1: If you need to cancel for any reason, we will refund the amount paid minus a $50 administrative fee.
- July 1 – August 1: There are no refunds, but you may transfer your paid spot to another person, sending a friend or family member to the retreat in your place for a $50 admin fee (to be paid by original attendee).
If the retreat is sold out, and you are unable to find someone to take your place, we’ll invite someone from the waitlist. If we are able to find a replacement, we’ll refund the amount paid minus a $50 administrative fee.
- After August 1: No refunds or transfers
Weather & travel insurance: We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for this trip. While we fully expect awesome weather and sunny skies, there’s a small chance that we could get a hurricane or tropical storm in August in the Outer Banks. It’s rare in August, but it happens. In the case of a hurricane, the island will be evacuated and the retreat would be cancelled. If this rare weather-caused cancellation were to happen, we would not be able to refund your money. Travel insurance makes sure that you won’t lose your investment in the small chance that weather disrupts our trip and forces us to cancel.
