Body Positive Yoga Teacher Training

3 hour workshop or 2-day weekend intensive
Learn how to craft and language a yoga class that is truly welcoming for students of all shapes and sizes. This yoga teachers’ workshop will include both practical asana instruction and discussion. We’ll debunk stereotypes and discuss how to create an environment of safety, agency, and consent. We’ll also explore common challenges faced by larger-bodied students. We’ll practice asana modifications and ways to use yoga props to help your students get the most out of your class.

Amber will speak from her experience as both a larger-bodied yoga student and teacher, and together we’ll build a toolbox to make your classes more welcoming and inclusive. Bring any and all questions that you might hesitate to ask your students about how to make the practice work for them – we’ll troubleshoot them together in this body-positive yoga lab setting.

Body Positive Yoga Workshop

3 hour workshop
If you’re in a larger body, a yoga class can be a wonderful place to make peace with your body and yourself. It can also be pure torture when accommodations aren’t made for your larger belly, legs, or chest. This workshop is designed especially for big-bodied yogis who want to be empowered to step into any class with confidence, knowing they have the tools to make yoga work for their bodies.

In this workshop, we’ll explore things like: How to keep your chest out of your face, twisting and folding when you have a belly, and other “sticky spots” like sun salutations and inversions. We’ll help each other find safe alignment and freedom in poses, learn to modify yoga to fit our bodies, and have some laughs along the way. Yoga teachers who’d like to learn modifications for your larger students are also welcome!

Inversions for Bigger Bodies

2 hour workshop
Have you ever been in a class when a teacher announces, “It’s time for inversion practice,” and you panic. What if you don’t have an inversion practice? Do you try what the teacher says and risk hurting yourself? What should you do? Or maybe you’ve seen photos on Instagram of yogis in bigger bodies doing fancy arm balances and headstands and think, “Why can’t I do that?” In this workshop, Amber will demystify inversions for bigger bodies. We’ll discover lots of options for inversions (there’s more than just headstand!) and cover things like how to keep your chest out of your face, how to use props to get upside down, supported inversion options, building strength for things like headstand and handstand, and more.

Exploring Sun Salutations

3 hour workshop
Sun Salutations (surya namaskara) are the foundation of many yoga classes, and a classic example of vinyasa (synchronizing breath with movement). Depending on your body type, level of strength, and range of motion, some parts of the sun salutation may be “sticky spots” for you. In this workshop, we will break down all the postures in surya namaskara and learn modifications to make the movements safe and enjoyable for all bodies. This workshop is appropriate for all levels, from brand new beginners to more experienced practitioners. You will leave with *your* customized sun salutation so you can walk into any yoga class and practice confidently.

Yoga teachers are also welcome who would like to learn modifications for students in larger bodies, those dealing with injuries, or beginners.

Radical Self-Acceptance

90 minute lecture & facilitated discussion
With thousands of images of “perfection” shot at us every day, it can be easy to compare ourselves with others and internalize the constant judgment and scrutiny of our bodies. Even during our yoga practice, it’s often easy to compare ourselves to the “ideal” body or look. Whether you’re at home, at the gym, at the yoga studio, or just moving around in the world, feeling self-conscious or even hateful toward your (normal! human! imperfect!) body is sometimes unavoidable. Drawing on mind-body, self-awareness, and practical self-care techniques, we’ll discover ways to boost confidence, get in touch with our inner badass, and foster a healthy self image. Please bring a pen and something to write on.

The Wayfinder Mandala: What’s Your Why?

What’s calling to you right now? It’s natural to feel pulled in lots of directions—torn between many different purposes, interests, career paths, relationships, and types of “impact” you want to have. Knowing what is guiding you (your “why”) is not a one-time reflection but an ongoing process. If you really take this in, this is great news; it means that you don’t have to know The Answers, you just need to know how to keep taking purposeful steps forward. The Wayfinder Mandala will help you do that by giving you a powerful visual metaphor and clear structure for seeing the many parts of you at once. It will help you be your own best guide for many years to come.

Want to learn how to de-stress instantly? Want to discover ways to reduce your anxiety? While we can’t always change our circumstances, we can learn how to react and respond to them differently. In this workshop, I’ll share the tools and techniques that have helped me and my students find inner calm when facing uncertain times. We’ll cover: 10 actionable ways to reduce anxiety right here and right now, insight into the biggest mistakes people make when they’re trying to hold it all together, 5 ways to de-stress instantly and reconnect with yourself, and a short mindful movement practice you can do anytime, anywhere.

About me & my teaching

View More: have practiced yoga for 14 years and earned my 200-hour hatha yoga teaching certificate from Anna Pittman (The Breathing Space) in 2011. My teaching style is about empowering folks to honor the body they bring to the mat today, and learn to live better in their own body rather than the one they wish they had, or the one they used to have.

The yoga community serves some people (young, female, bendy, thin, white, able-bodied) very well, but the rest of us can feel intimidated or plain out unwelcome walking into a “yoga place”. My classes are for the “non-yogis” – those of us who are too fat, stiff, old, those of us with non-conforming bodies, those who think yoga is too woo-woo – folks who think yoga isn’t for them. I also am a big fan of yoga in non-yoga places (libraries, prisons, parks, festivals).

In my classes, I focus on making yoga poses accessible for all bodies. My classroom is yoga lab where we each try things, and find modifications and variations on poses that work for us, that serve the pose’s function… instead of squishing our body into a form just to look like the picture or the teacher.

I work hard to make my classes inclusive and body positive, and empower folks to find the modifications they need to be able to take any yoga class they want, while taking care of their own bodies. Folks in non-conforming bodies shouldn’t feel limited to gentle or beginner classes, and my goal is to show people that their bodies can do amazing things on the mat today, and then send them out into the world to claim the space they take up. And although we talk about serious stuff like body acceptance, Health at Every Size, being empowered, safe alignment, and a take-no-crap approach, my classes are always full of laughter and silliness, too.
