If you’re a yogi with a bigger body, being balled up in child’s pose or trying to get into shoulderstand without suffocating yourself (hello, boobs!) can frustrate the heck out of you. A blissful hour on the mat for the rest of the class can turn into you throwing in the yoga-towel if you don’t know how to modify poses for YOUR body. This workshop was designed especially to help you do that.
In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn:
- How to avoid suffocation-by-boobage in all kinds of poses
- Twisting and folding when you have a belly
- Sun salutations for your body
- Inversions for larger bodies – we’ll use the yoga wall and props to get you safely upside down
Come to this small-group workshop where we’ll help each other find safe alignment and freedom in poses, learn to modify yoga to fit our bodies, and have some laughs along the way.
- When: Friday, January 27, 2012. 7-9pm
- Where: The Space Above Yoga Center – 202 W. 22nd St. Norfolk, Va. (in Ghent)
- How much: $25
Space is extremely limited! Sign up here (click on workshops & events tab) or call 757-622-2474.

Oh wow how cool. Wont be able to make it but will maybe try some other time.
Hope your well.
Thanks Alison! I’ll have at least one more workshop before I move so I will keep you posted!
I know this is a long shot but do you know of any of these types of yoga classes in the Washington DC region? If it was easy to drive to Norfolk I would be there in a heartbeat!!!
Cassandra, there are several teachers in dc who cater to larger bodies and they’re listed on this page! http://www.curvyyoga.com/resources/
I’m moving to northern va near Winchester in April so when I get settled in I hope to offer some classes and workshops out there. Maybe you’ll be able to join me!
Hi Amber- I wish your events were closer to home (N.Ca for me)…Are you considering putting some of your material in writing? …Maybe a book in the long run? As a yoga instructor I often struggle in coming up with modifications or alternatives for heavier or even more “well- endowed” students. Call me crazy, but I’ve actually strapped a 40lb weight vest on myself to try to figure out which poses maybe more difficult. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!
Hey Amber! I’m so glad to hear you’re moving to the Northern VA area! I live there, and I’d be really interested in looking into those Big Asana classes. My boyfriend and I took a yoga course at our university, and while I don’t have the largest of figures (very much an FA but currently more chubby than BBW) he would definitely qualify as a bigger body, and would sometimes feel a little uncomfortable in a predominantly skinny yoga class. He really got a lot out of yoga, though, and I’d love to be able to get both of us back into it!
